Walks near the holiday cottages 2
Brownsham Woods
SS286260
A good place for woodland walks with coastal walks as well.
Brownsham is about 25 minutes drive from Hallsannery. Follow the
A361 towards Bude and then just after the Clovelly roundabout
turn right signed Hartland on the B3248. After about a mile bear
right signed ‘Hartland Point’ and after about a mile on this
road the road bears round to the left and you carry on to the
right. Follow this road for about another mile and you land up
at a National trust car park.

There are a range of walks here and a map at the entrance to the
car park. You can go through the woods from the car park, these
are spectacular at bluebell time, or you can go back out the
entrance of the car park, turn left and then right at the bottom
of the road and this will take to down to the coast at Mouth
Mill and you can follow the coast path back through Brownsham
woods (there is a very steep but fairly short climb from the
lime kiln at Mouth Mill to the top of the cliff). If you want a
longer walk you can walk to Clovelly from Mouth Mill along the
coast path. Mouth Mill is good for geology and rock pools on a
low tide.
An hour’s walk through Brownsham Woods
Take the track from the car park and walk down it to the woods.
Go through the gate and bear left across a bridge. Follow this
track down the hill to the right. You reach another bridge which
you pass and then come to a junction where you turn right. Keep
on this path until you reach the cliff (avoid a footpath down to
your right). There is a wonderful views of Mouth Mill from here,
the North Devon coast and Lundy Island. Climb up the hill, there
is a very convenient bench halfway up, a good excuse for a
breather. Ignore paths off to your left and carry on up and go
through the gate onto Windbury Hill Fort. Once you get over the
top of the hill you will see a signpost which heads you back to
the left to the car park. Follow this until you reach the second
bridge at the start of your walk, you can either cross this and
climb up the hill and then turn right back to the car park, or
follow back up the track to your right that you first followed.
